Random Ramblings

NFL Players and Water

In case you haven’t seen it, Kenny Mayne (ESPN) did a great little satire piece this week on NFL players and water. Basically he was making fun of the fact that, for whatever reason, football players can’t seem to get their own water. Think about it. When was the last time you saw a college or pro football player getting his own drink of water? I guess picking up the water bottle and squeezing it to get their own drink would wear them out. Instead they have to have some poor water guy, or gal, squeeze the bottle and squirt the water into their mouth. How silly is that? Doesn’t work that way in baseball or basketball. NBA players have the water brought to them in cups, but at least they have to drink it themselves! Baseball players are the least spoiled (at least when it comes to water). They actually have to get their own! Can’t believe their player’s association hasn’t filed a suit over that one yet…

Living Alone IS NOT For Me

This is an understatement. Lynn has been in Texas visiting her family for a week and I’m sooo ready for her to get home. With the exception of Tuesday afternoon/evening, when Steph came home to vote and go to dinner with me, it’s just been me and the dogs. It’s been really weird to be on the flip side of this travel/stay at home thing. I’m usually the one traveling and Lynn’s the one at home. Lynn’s been gone before, but this is the first time since Steph has gone off to college and it’s pretty lonely. How pitiful is that?

Marquee Signs

I guess it goes back to my early Holiday Inn days, when I had to come up with stuff to put on our great sign, but I seem to pay attention to marquee signs. I like to read both the witty ones and the ones they obviously didn’t think through such as “Now Hiring Free HBO”. Never understood how you can hire free HBO. Or, “XYZ Lounge featuring Live DJ”. As opposed to what? A dead dj? A great urban legend was about the hotel that would pick a guest at random, recognize them as their guest of the day and put their name out on the sign. All went well until they put up the name of an unfaithful husband and his wife saw it. OUCH!

Another thing that makes me chuckle is when the signs are not updated very often. Beech High School is bad about this. They have a nice sign, but they’ll leave stuff up for weeks after the event or date has passed. What’s up with that? How hard is it to send someone out there to change the sign?

This month’s Stand Firm devotional magazine had a list of messages seen up on church marquee signs. Here they are:

  • A clear conscience makes a soft pillow.
  • The wages of sin are death. Repent before payday.
  • Never give the devil a ride. He’ll always want to drive.
  • Can’t sleep? Try counting your blessings.
  • God answers knee-mail.
  • Christians, keep the faith…but not from others!
  • Satan subtracts and divides. God adds and multiplies.
  • Forbidden fruit creates many jams.
  • Try Jesus. If you don’t like Him, the devil will always take you back.

I’ll leave you with one I saw on the way to work this week: “Always leave people better off than how you found them”. Good word…

  1. That’s funny that you mentioned Beech High School and their marquees- that drives my Dad crazy as well, as does that sound quality in at the theater shows and show choir concerts- Oooh he gets so aggravated about that. And as for the church marquees, I think the best one I’ve seen is “Visitors Welcome, Members Expected.” Haha

  2. Jonathan – I could see that with your dad. The sound was, and probably still is, pretty bad. Look at the positive side, you could always fall back on that ready-made excuse when the show choir wasn’t doing too well!

I like your church marquee. Anyone else have one they’d like to add?

  3. [...] case you missed it, I blogged about this story a couple of weeks ago. It’s been pretty interesting to see how search engines and tags work. [...]
